FLAMEPROOFING - DIESEL
VEHICLES
Chess Engineering first converted a diesel forklift for
use in a hazardous area in the early 1970s. Since then
Chess has flameproofed all types of mobile diesel equipment
including counter-balance forklift trucks, straddle carriers,
sweepers, side-loaders and mobile cranes.
Mobile diesel equipment can be modified in such a way to make it suitable for
use in Zone 1, 2, 21or 22 areas.

areas, complete with flameproofed lighting package
for road registration purposes.

Various starting systems used on diesel equipment include:
- Remote Electric Start – the vehicle is started
in a non-hazardous area, and the battery disconnected
before the vehicle enters the hazardous area.
- Remote Air Start – the unit can be started in
non-hazardous and hazardous areas by means of an air
starting system with air reservoir which is recharged
from remote air supplies located around the premises.
- Air Start – the unit can be started in non-hazardous
and hazardous areas by means of an air starting system
with air reservoir which is recharged from a compressor
mounted on board which is either engine or hydraulically
driven.
- Hydraulic Start – was very popular in the
early days of flameproofing. It uses a hydrotor – a
hydraulic starter motor - powered from a large capacity
hydraulic accumulator which is recharged by the operation
of the forklift’s hydraulic system or, in emergencies,
by the operation of a hand pump.
Flameproofed electrical accessories are available
and can be tailored to suit specific requirements.
