PROTECTION TECHNIQUES

There are a number of techniques available when protecting equipment for use in hazardous areas. However, the choice is more limited when protecting mobile material handling equipment. Available techniques include:

Water cooling

To reduce surface temperatures.

Exhaust conditioners

To cool exhaust emissions and quench flames

Ex tD

Protection by enclosure. Exclusion of dusts, fibres and or flyings

Ex mD

Protection by encapsulation
Exclusion of dusts, fibres and or flyings

Ex d

Flameproof enclosure - Explosion containment

Ex i

Intrinsic Safety - Energy limitation

Ex e

Increased safety - Avoidance of ignition

Ex n

Non-sparking - Avoidance of ignition

Ex m

Encapsulation - Exclusion

Ex p

Pressurisation - Exclusion

Ex s Special protection
Static dissipation

Static discharge of equipment, tyres and belt drives

Hazardous area protection techniques

A bank of intrinsic safety barriers mounted in an Ex d enclosure protecting switches, potentiometers and sensors which are located in the hazardous area.

An Exhaust conditioner
